highest score in Decision Analysis and lands critical
corporate account, Energizer Battery Manuf., Inc.

For Energizer
Battery Manufacturing, Inc. located in Asheboro, North
Carolina, the decision to install Richards-Zeta controls
over several other name-brand manufactures just seemed
to make sense.
The plant was running on an outdated
and obsolete legacy system. The hardware and software
were no longer supported or even available from the
manufacture, maintenance costs were sky-rocketing, flexibility
was non-existent, user-friendliness-response time was
slow and trending and data logging were not even available.
When the system failed, the program needed to be manually
re-typed, which could take anywhere from a week or more
just to get the system up and running. These dependability,
reliability and interfacing issues forced Energizer
to reconsider the path they were on.
After many months of careful
research, a team of Energizer executives decided it
was in the best interest for the plant to replace the
system. They decided on four vendors as possible replacements,
Richards-Zeta being one.
Richards-Zeta’s Products,
Solutions and Business were compared to several other
well-known and “name-recognized” BAS manufactures
controls: competition Richards-Zeta welcomes. System
requirements included the capability of supporting the
newest building expansion, provide real-time power monitoring,
historical data and trending, and be capable of expansion,
to include: fire/life safety systems, security, digital
video, etc. Other requirements included ease of programming,
user- friendliness, a non-proprietary system and a truly
‘Open’ System architecture.
Richards-Zeta received the highest
score using a Kepner-Tregoe decision analysys, (a management
consulting and training firm helping organizations meet—and
surpass—their goals and integrate new capabilities
for on- go ing success. Richards-Zeta’s solution
was assessed to be free of additional ‘‘hidden’
risks found in the other control lines; including but
not limited to: maintenance, support, and software upgrades.
The Solution.
Richards-Zeta’s North Carolina based system integrator,
AC Corporation, installed a complete RZ system consisting
of over 50 controllers with the Richards-Zeta’s
perfectHOST front-end. Energizer anticipates solid savings
from this installation; $25,000 in software costs, $10,000
in hardware spare parts and $78,000 just from reducing
energy by 200KW/month. The estimated total yearly savings
totals $161,600 with the estimated IRR at 17.36%.
